When these bean-shaped organs aren’t cared for properly, they can become damaged and develop a condition called chronic kidney disease (CKD), which prevents them from doing their job as well as they should. CKD can lead to other health problems, such as heart disease and stroke, and there are often no symptoms in the beginning stages.
